Times like the current economy can make you feel like you are drowning. In order to keep your head above water, certain simply steps can help save the money you need to make ends meet.

One of the easiest places to start is with utility bills. Many of these steps will help save energy, and all of them save money. Let’s talk about a few win-win scenarios:

1) Lower Utility Costs: This can start with as simple a step as replacing incandescent light bulbs one at a time with Compact Florescent Light bulbs. If you pay for water, place a couple of sand-filled one liter water bottles to reduce flush volume. For either a gas or electric hot water tank, purchase an insulating blanket designed for water tanks. On average, homeowners save up to 10% off home heating costs by wrapping water tank.

2)Eliminate Redundant Services: Are you a member of NetFlix? Perhaps it is time for cable to go – particularly if you get most of your “Television” episodes from the internet.

There is nothing like an economic downturn to teach families what is truly important. When times are good it is easy to get distracted by the latest celebrity fad, the latest must have gadget and other trivia. But when things get tough we rediscover the truly important things in life – things like time with family, true friends and other things that really matter.

If there is a silver lining in the difficult economic times we no face perhaps that is it. The severity of the current recession has forced many families to curtail their living expenses and tone down their lifestyle, and many of those families have found those changes to be positive ones. Families who a year ago could not conceive of skipping that ski vacation to Aspen are now enjoying cross country skiing closer to home. And families that used to routinely eat out every night of the week are enjoying their newfound cooking skills as well as quality time with their family and friends.

The bad economy has also caused neighbors to band together, helping one another out with everything from firewood and heating oil to food and gas money. Neighbor helping neighbor used to be the way of the world, but somewhere along the line that sort of neighborly interaction went out of the style. Seeing it return in at least some parts of the country is another silver lining hiding under the dark cloud of the economy.

Today, almost everyone has a fistful of credit cards, a mailbox full of bills, and a medicine cabinet full of headache relievers. Back in the day, no one worked on Sunday or shopped either. It truly was a day of rest. Today, lots of people don’t even know what it means to have nothing to do or know what to do if they do get a day of complete rest and relaxation.

Everyone is wheeling and dealing, vying for time on the computer or gaming system, or browsing the online or brick-and-mortar shops for the latest craze. Isn’t there anything left to do that doesn’t involve stress and money? Of course there is, but it takes a small bit of planning.

Even though some public libraries might be closing due to lack of funding, enough of them remain open and offer incredible possibilities for free entertainment. Unlike fifty or sixty years ago, in addition to books today’s libraries have DVDs and CDs available for borrowing free of charge. Plus, lots of libraries feature reading clubs, chess clubs, and more- all free of charge.

For those who can’t tear themselves away from electronics, libraries also feature free use of computers. This means that anyone who needs to or wants to stop paying for Internet use can still access online information at the local library. Why don’t you visit your public library and see what it has to offer you?

In some cases, an early retirement package is an opportunity in disguise. Have you been wanting to buy your own business? If so, you now have cash and the free time to invest. Other opportunities involve employees that have other options. For example, if you’ve been working to supplement the family income but your family doesn’t rely on it, then you’re in a great position to reap a nice lump sum. Perhaps you can pay off your mortgage or send your kids to college with your windfall.

Read the Fine Print

They don’t call early retirement a “package” for nothing. If you’ve been offered a package, you’ll receive a huge envelop filled with papers describing the deal. Read it, read it again, and read it one more time. Now, call your tax consultant or lawyer and have them read it. You may be giving up certain rights or opportunities. There may be room for negotiations. Before making a final decision, it pays to fully understand what’s being offered.

When early retirement packages are offered, employers have thought long and hard about these decisions. They will have addressed many of your concerns including possibly offering health care credits, enhancements to pensions, and job placement assistance. Attend all early retirement presentations, company meetings, or seminars and get as much information as possible. Read your paperwork carefully and consult with a tax professional before making your choice.

The second half of the online banking safety and security puzzle rests with the bank itself. It is important to review the policies and procedures the bank has put in place to protect customers from fraudulent emails, phone calls and other contacts. Customers can take some initiative by never clicking on an email link in an unsolicited email and never giving out their Social Security number or bank account number unless they themselves initiated the call. It is up to the bank, however, to provide additional security features that will enhance the safety of their customers.

One of the most common approaches to online safety and security is the challenge question. In most cases online banking customers will be required to answer a number of questions to which only they have the answers. Those challenge questions will then be used to verify identity if the customer attempts to access the account from a different computer. The nature of these questions varies from institution to institution, but some of the most common are:

ü What was the name of your best friend in grade school?

ü What was your high school mascot?

ü In what city was the college you attended?

ü In what city was your mother born?
